About the Event
Baobá - Toronto
Baobá is a trio formed by Toronto’s top female percussionists taking traditional beats to the next level. Empowered by the natural musicality that flows from South American bodies, Anita Graciano, Y Josephine and Mari Palhares, representing Colombia, Venezuela and Brazil respectively, demonstrate a great mix; Ideal balance of voice, melody, and instrumentation. When the group started in 2015 the dynamic was clear. Each member would influence the others through the different drumming rhythms they had studied from various backgrounds, shaping what had been taught into new lessons. Although this project might appear recent, Anita, Y, and Mari, planted this Baobá seed way back on the common ground of friendship and continuous arts making... The group mostly performs original songs, old school Latin covers, cumbia, salsa, funk, and Afro-Brazilian/Colombian/Venezuelan inspired rhythms.
